A tangible interative device which treats sound as an object that can be 'sensed'

Project Brief

The project was on the basis of the secondary research done where the insights suggested that all of the early exploration done regarding tangible interaction with sound is used to elevate other tangible interactions. The interactions/context are so heavy that the 'sound' takes a back seat.

Materializing sound

Treating sound as if it where a material. Interacting with sound, as if you could put in a box, shake it to see if it is there inside and throw it out to get rid of it.

Features

Below are some of the features which were implemented through the gestures performed on the prototype.

Record Sound

Open and store your voice.








Play sound

Open and tilt the box to play








Delete Sound

Open and upside down the box and shake the sound out








Feedback of Sound Presence

You can hear the mumbling of sound in the box when you shake it








Error prevention feedback before deletion

Hear the sound (through volume reduction) pouring out as you tilt the open box upside down






*The implementation of this gesture is still pending and will be done in future

Discussion

Looking at the future of this Prototype where we can experiencing sound with intuitive, organic and playful interactions. It’s not about the product or this particular tangible interaction with sound, but it’s about bringing the organic elements of voice/sound to the unforgetful digital world.

Differentiating ambient sound with voice intended to be recorded.

Data transfer from the box to the phone in tangible ways.

Error prevention for sound deletion. Illusion of ‘sound might spill’ by reducing the volume as the box tilts upside down.

Rusting/aging (adding glitches, playing with the volume, changing texture, adding noise) of sound as it plays again and again so as to restore the organic nature of sound to the ‘recorded’ sound.

In the below video you can see the how the solution is thought through. We can also observe user journey of 2 people in a house. In here, we have considered only one scenario. Error scenarios could be more explored in the future.
